AT&T (the old AT&T) spent a ton of money at Bell Labs coming up with 110 Blocks. Through lots of testing, they determined that having a raised post  in the middle of the pairs lets the installer push the twisted pair down quicker and easier, and helps prevent the installer from punching it down a half pair off.

In the early 2000's, when the Chinese took over production of almost everything telecom related, they decided to make the punchings work with both the 110 tool (which was mainly used in the US), and the Krone tool (which was used in China and some other countries). The Krone patent on their blocks ran out about that time, which sped-up the switch to these combination jacks. The Chinese can't use the raised post in the middle of the pair if they want the installer to be able to use a Krone tool on the jack, and they'd prefer to sell the same jack to as many countries as possible.

Since the US has very little say in what the Chinese sell us today, we end up using what we can get. We've sourced our jacks from what is probably the last company making CAT5e jacks with 110 punchings (in China). It's very possible they'll give up on it in the future. They told us they won't make a CAT6 110 version, since we'd be the only company buying it.

The saving grace for the jack pictured above is the Jack Rapid tool, which lets the installer lay in the wires, pop the jack in the tool, and squeeze the trigger to terminate and cut all the wires at one time.
The Jack Rapid is probably twice as fast as terminating a jack with a 110 tool!  We've got a heck of a deal on both the CAT5e Jacks and the Jack Rapid tool further down the page.
