The Door Box Controller goes in-series with the telephone line coming into the house. Use it with or without a phone line!
Press the CALL button on the Door Box, and all of the phones in the house ring in a distinctive manner.
Built-in Call Waiting gives you a distinctive Beep. Hookflash to answer the door, and hookflash again to go back to your caller.
Call Waiting from the door works the same way as the Phone Company's, so your customer already knows how to use it!

Door Box ControllerThe Controller is the heart of the Door Box System.
The wall mount Controller is normally mounted near where the phone lines come into the building, or near the phone system.
Each Door has a Distinctive Ring, different from the regular ring on a CO line. Note that you wouldn't hear the distinctive ring on most phone systems, because the phone system makes its own ring (it doesn't pass the cadence from the phone line through to the ringers on the phones).
If a phone system can't pass the distinctive ringing on to the phones, and the customer really needs to know whether it's the front or back door ringing, the solution is to use two Controllers, one for each door, and have them ring in to separate CO lines on the phone system (this is still pretty inexpensive!). For example, CO5 for the front door, and CO6 for the dock door.
You can bridge up to four Door Boxes to each Door connection on the Controller. That lets you have up to 8 Door Boxes on each Controller
BUT WAIT, there's more...
You can put up to four Door Box Controllers in-series with each other. Just go from LINE OUT to LINE IN from Controller to Controller. With 8 Door Boxes per Controller, that means you can have up to 32 Door Boxes ringing in on 1 Line!
Easy Installation! The telephone line and/or telephones connect to either the modular jacks, or screw terminals (jacks and screw terminals are bridged together internally).
There are two screw terminals (+ and -) for each of the two Doors.
The Controller installs in minutes!
Use LINE IN for the telephone company phone line if you are sharing the Door Box System with a phone line in a home. LINE OUT goes to all of the phones in a home, or a phone system in an office.
NOTE: Do not share a phone line if the Door Box System is on a line on a phone system. Because the line on the phone system can be put on hold, there would be nobody to hear the Call Waiting tone when someone is at the door, and the line is on hold. That would lead to service calls where the customer complains that someone was at the door, but they never heard the phones ring.
Call Waiting should NEVER be put on a CO line on a phone system for that reason. It's very hard to diagnose No Answer problems caused by Call Waiting on a service call!
Use the Controller to make your phones ring! You don't even need a Door Box if you just want to to ring your phones when something happens!
- When you short the Door 1 or Door 2 contacts through a 300 ohm resistor, any phones you have connected to LINE OUT will ring!
- Stick an electric eye on your driveway, and the phones will ring every time someone comes up the drive
- All you need is something that provides a dry closure to make your phones ring
- If you also have a Door Box, put the Door Box on Door 1, and the dry closure on Door 2 (you'll hear a distinctive ring)
Controller comes with an AC plug (not a power cube). The Controller MUST be installed in an area protected from the weather! You should also install an AC Surge Protector, and Lightning Protection if it's connected to a phone line.

Even with the default 3 Ring Chip, you still have around 10 seconds to answer the phone to talk directly to the door after the phones stop ringing. If you hear dial tone when you pick up the phone, simply hookflash once to call out to Door 1 to talk to the visitor.
Unplug the AC before removing the circuit board from the Metal Box!
While it's easy to get the circuit board out of the Controller by speading the legs on the metal box, only an experienced technician should remove and replace the chip. If any of the legs are bent by mistake when inserting the new chip (with the power off!), the Controller won't work properly.

This Fuse is required by the FCC. It's in-series between LINE-IN and LINE-OUT on the Controller.
This Fuse is only for use when sharing a phone line, it's not in the circuit when the Door Box System is used on a CO Line on a phone system.
If the Telephone Line Fuse (bottom) blows, there'll be no dial tone at LINE-OUT. This fuse only blows after a lightning storm. When it blows, it protects both the Door Box Controller and all of the telephones in the house. It shouldn't be considered lighting protection!
Unplug the AC before removing the circuit board from the Metal Box!

The Telephone Line Fuse is the bottom fuse, just above the modular jacks.

This Fuse is in-series with the AC power cord and the electronics in the Door Box Controller. It should never blow, but if there's no power to the Controller and it's plugged in to a live AC outlet, this might be the problem.
This is a Slow Blow Fuse. Don't remove the two fuses and mix them up!
It's easy to get the circuit board out of the Controller by speading the legs on the metal box.
The AC Fuse is the top fuse, next to the AC power cord on the circuit board.
You can tell the fuse is Slow Blow by looking for the two little solder blobs on the wire inside the fuse (circled in red).

Door Strike (Lock) ControllerWhen the user pushes the * key (star key) on their phone, you'll get a dry closure (short) on two wires for 3 seconds (or as long as the * key is held down, plus 3 seconds if the phone will make a tone for as long as you hold a button down).
When the * key is pressed, only the door that the user is talking to will open. If there are two doors with door strikes, you'll need two Door Strike Controllers, one for each door.
A security feature in the Door Strike Controller will prevent someone from making a * tone at the door to try to open the door strike.
If you need to open a door strike or gate from the door, without someone doing it from inside the building, simply put a keypad type switch at the door, which will give you a dry closure (which you would bridge across the same contacts as the Door Strike Controller).
There is no separate connection to the Door Strike Controller from the main Door Box Controller. The Door Strike Controller can be installed anywhere in-series along the single pair of wires going to the door. It doesn't have to be installed by the main Controller. It's usually installed near the door (where the strike and transformer are), so you don't have to deal with the voltage drop which occurs when you send voltage a long ways on small wires.
NOTE: The Door Strike Controller doesn't provide the voltage to operate the door strike. It only gives you a dry closure so you can operate a door strike or gate (you put the two wires on the Door Strike Controller in-series between one side of the door strike and the door strike transformer). The door strike and transformer for the door strike must be customer provided.
IMPORTANT: The Door Strike Controller should be used for low voltage applications. If you are using a 110VAC door strike, use a slave relay between the Door Strike Controller and the door strike.
At a Gate, you'd install the Door Strike Controller out at the Gate,
near the customer provided gate controller and the Door Box.

Door Chime Interface (Relay)The Door Chime Interface gives you a .8 second (less than a second) dry closure when the CALL button on the Door Box is pushed.
Use the .8 second Dry Closure to:
- Ring the real Door Chime in a house
- Operate the switcher for security cameras, so the switcher locks onto the correct camera at the door where the Door Box is located
- Open a door strike or gate automatically when someone pushes the CALL button on a Door Box
When used with the old door bell, connect the Door Chime Interface so that it rings either the front or rear (double or single) chime. If you have two doors where you want to operate separate chimes or cameras, you'll need a Door Chime Interface for each door.
Two wires on the Door Chime Interface are simply connected (bridged) anywhere along the pair of wires to the door. It can be installed near the main Door Box Controller, at the door, or anywhere in-between.
The Door Chime Interface comes with a 110VAC power cube. You must use the power cube or the two included AA batteries. The batteries will last about a year, and then must be replaced (which will lead to a service call), so the included power cube makes more sense.
If you have a dog, you need the Door Chime Interface to make the old door chime ring when someone's at the door... Otherwise the dog won't bark when someone pushes the CALL button, the dog will bark and run to the door every time the phone rings (your customer won't like that!).

Door Intercom ModuleThe Door Intercom Module is the least expensive Intercom you'll ever see!
It can be used with or without a Door Box, but you'll need the main Door Box Controller for it to work.
Make all of the phones ring in the house, to signal someone to pick up the nearest phone.
You can even call from a cordless phone!To use the Intercom, simply pick up any phone (connected to LINE OUT on the main Controller), hookflash once (the dial tone will go away), dial 7, and hang-up (you'll hear a beep until you hang-up). The phones will ring 3 times (or 8 times if you change the Controller Chip). When the phones stop ringing, someone has picked up the phone somewhere in the house. Just pick up the phone to talk to them through the Door Box Controller (you're not using your phone line for this at all).
Installation is really simple! Two wires on the Door Intercom Module connect to Door 1 on the Controller, and the other two wires connect to Door 2. That's it!

Electronic Devices Attached to Phone Lines Need Lightning Protection!
If the Door Box System is attached to a phone line in a home, it can be damaged during a lightning storm.
The Phone Company provides lightning protection where their wires enter a home, but it's designed to prevent damage to the old style phones that weren't electronic. Modern electronic phones or phone equipment is much more sensitive to lightning than older phones.
If your Door Box is mounted to the side of the building, and the wires don't travel outside the building, you don't need lightning protection on the wire coming from the door. If the Door Box is located at a gate, away from the building, you absolutely need lightning protection on the pair of wires before it gets to the Controller.
Even if you run the cable to the gate in a metal conduit, you still need lightning protection on the pair from the door, at the controller.

This is as easy as it gets!
Plug the Yellow Plug directly into a wall outlet that you've tested to make sure it's wired correctly (see our AC Outlet Tester). Strip the #12 Green Stranded Wire and put it in the Modular or Terminal Strip Lightning Protector ground, or in a Ground Lug.
Don't plug this into a power strip! You want the best ground you can get, and you don't want to include all the extra (smaller) wire in a power strip.
